FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ARE THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE TO ANY POSSIBLE FIRES. THESE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS MUST BE IN PROPER WORKING CONDITION TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE, LIFESAVING FIRE PREVENTION.

The servicing of fire extinguishers is mandated by NFPA 10. These services are to be performed once a year and are done to guarantee proper function.

The most common fire extinguisher are multipurpose ABC extinguishers. Their maintenance includes:

  1. Every year a fire extinguisher needs to be visually inspected. This inspection will spot any abnormalities that the fire extinguisher may have and deem it incapable of properly functioning. Abnormalities that exist in fire extinguishers may be; low pressure, dents in cylinder, damaged bracketing, damaged trigger, etc. Also, at this time the placement of the fire extinguisher is evaluated to ensure that it is in the proper location and that the chemical is correct for its intended use.
  2. On the sixth year of service a fire extinguisher must be recharged. This is a process where there is an entire fire extinguisher breakdown. An internal inspection is performed on the cylinder to check its integrity. O-rings and valve-stems are inspected and the cylinder is refilled and re-pressurized.
  3. On the twelfth year of service a fire extinguisher must be hydrostatically tested. A hydrostatic test includes dismantling the fire extinguisher then pressurizing the cylinder to ensure its integrity. The fire extinguisher is then reassembled and re-pressurized.

These three services are the most common for many fire extinguishers used today. Some inspection methods for particular fire extinguishers may vary.
